Koinly: tax-year plans and a reconciliation workflow

Koinly supports exchange/API and file imports, a free preview and paid tax-year reports. The useful question is whether your full history reconciles.

From exchange history to a tax summary

Koinly’s pricing and integration documentation lists API sync, exchange CSV imports, wallet imports, transfer matching, negative-balance warnings and capital-gains previews. The Coinbase and Kraken guides describe supported crypto-exchange import routes.

An imported balance is not automatically a correct return. If prior acquisitions are missing, basis can be wrong even when current-year proceeds match. Supported crypto imports do not establish native event-contract support.

Record preparation: import, reconcile duplicates and transfers, then choose a report.

Watch Koinly import Coinbase history: read-only sync or yearly CSVs

Koinly's walkthrough of bringing Coinbase activity into Koinly, either through a read-only account connection or yearly CSV statements, plus the separate Coinbase Pro export.

What this demonstrates

  • Auto-sync redirects you to Coinbase to grant read-only access; the presenter stresses this does not let Koinly move funds (about 1:16 to 1:35).
  • Koinly's CSV import screen warns that Coinbase CSV files lack detail on Advanced trades and recommends the API connection for anyone who used Advanced trading (about 1:57 to 2:19).
  • For CSVs, the video generates a custom statement for each year with all assets, all transactions and CSV format, so a multi-year history needs several files (about 2:28 to 2:58).
  • Old Coinbase Pro history needs both the Account and the Fills report for every year, and Koinly notes that new Coinbase Pro API keys can no longer be created (about 3:11 to 5:22).
  • After importing, the presenter reviews the transactions list, including staking tags, before opening the tax reports page (about 5:40 to 6:52).

Uploaded by Koinly in May 2024 (the video title says 2025); statement lists in the footage end at April 2024. Coinbase menus, the Coinbase Pro export and Koinly’s plans may have changed. Koinly presents this as education, not tax advice. NeonForecast has not connected a Coinbase account.

One-off plans for a tax year

The reviewed page lists Newbie at $49 for 100 transactions, Hodler at $99 for 1,000 and Trader from $199 for 3,000+. Higher-volume users can purchase additional transactions. The provider says plans are one-time tax-year purchases, and report downloads/revisions for the purchased year are not restricted to a single export.

The free workflow supports import and preview before a report purchase, subject to the displayed free limits. It lists Form 8949/Schedule D and tax-software export formats. Country and cost-basis settings still need to match your own filing situation.

A useful pre-purchase check

Add the appropriate exchange integration and import complete trade, deposit and withdrawal histories, including prior-year acquisitions. Match transfers across your own accounts; inspect negative-balance and missing-basis warnings before relying on the aggregate gain.

For example, a transfer of the same coin between two of your wallets should not be evaluated as a fresh taxable disposal merely because the destination import arrived first. Reconcile the source records, then preview the tax year and select the transaction tier. This describes the documented process, not a tested private-account result.

Refunds, payment and scope

The pricing FAQ says a refund can be requested within seven days if no tax report has been generated. It lists card and certain crypto payment methods. Generating a report can therefore change the refund position; importing first is different from buying and immediately exporting.

Koinly is useful to research for supported crypto record aggregation. We have not verified a complete Kalshi or Polymarket tax workflow, imported a real account or independently audited tax calculations. Instrument-specific tax questions require appropriate advice.

Check count, tax year and refund before export

Koinly’s reviewed plans are one-off purchases for a tax year. A seven-day refund window requires that no report has been generated. Importing and reconciling first is therefore materially different from generating a report and then testing whether it fits.
