Koinly vs CoinLedger: imports, limits and tax reports

Import and reconcile before buying a tax report. Both reviewed entry bands start at $49 for 100 transactions; year coverage, counting and missing records can decide which fits. Neither establishes event-contract tax treatment.

Choose by unresolved records, not a matching headline price

Both reviewed entry bands are similar; import completeness and report-year support can decide the purchase. At 900 transactions plus 200 discovered historical rows, a 1,000-record plan may no longer fit. A 3,200-record ledger needs an exact tier/top-up quote, not an assumption that “from $199” means unlimited.

Two crypto ledgers, not a tax opinion

Both products document exchange imports, portfolio views and paid tax-report exports. They are relevant to a spot-crypto user consolidating trades across exchanges and wallets. Their documented Coinbase and Kraken import routes do not establish support for every event-contract ledger.

Neither a tax-software subscription nor an imported CSV determines the legal tax character of a Kalshi or Polymarket position. We have not verified a native event-contract reconciliation workflow and do not promise one.

Compare the same tax year and transaction count

The reviewed Koinly page lists Newbie at $49/year for 100 transactions, Hodler at $99 for 1,000 and Trader from $199 for 3,000+. CoinLedger lists Hobbyist at $49 for 100, Investor at $99 for 1,000 and Pro from $199 for 3,000+, with additional transactions purchased separately. Both describe reports as one-time tax-year purchases rather than a required endless subscription.

A documented import and reconciliation workflow

Create the exchange wallet/integration, authorise read-only access where supported or upload the exchange’s complete transaction CSV, then compare imported dates and balances to the exchange history. Include earlier acquisitions: selling this year does not erase the need for prior-year cost basis.

Transfers between your own wallets need matching so they are not mistaken for sales or income. Resolve missing basis, duplicates and unsupported rows before choosing a tax year and exporting Form 8949/Schedule D or the desired tax-software format. These are documented procedures, not a claim that we connected a real customer account.

Meaningful differences and limits

Koinly advertises a free capital-gains preview and gives a seven-day refund window if no report has been generated. CoinLedger advertises a 14-day money-back guarantee, unlimited wallet/exchange syncs and unlimited report revisions. Its retrieved page explicitly listed reports for 2010–2025; that does not establish a completed 2026 filing product.

Choose by supported import details and the errors in your actual dataset. A matching headline price does not prove matching transaction-count definitions, tax settings or report coverage. Keep credentials read-only and retain your original records.

Synthetic reconciliation: five rows, three problems

This original toy ledger demonstrates reconciliation tasks, not product performance or tax treatment. No records were uploaded to a vendor. Suppose an older 1-unit acquisition is missing, a 0.2-unit transfer appears at both ends, and a repeated sale is imported twice. Treating every row as a new taxable disposal would be a data error before any classification decision.

Choose an alternative by the record problem

Before replacing a tool, identify whether the problem is unsupported import history, a transaction-count boundary, report-year coverage or a reconciliation error. Switching brands cannot reconstruct an absent acquisition record. A free exchange CSV and your original source files can be the right first step even when neither paid tool is selected.

This comparison documents Koinly and CoinLedger. Preserve the original exchange CSV and wallet history independently of either software choice. A list of more brands cannot replace a supported import path and a complete source ledger.

Executed synthetic record-consistency protocol

We ran this original five-row toy dataset through our local deterministic checker, not through Koinly, CoinLedger or another vendor. Expected and observed: five input rows, four distinct source records, duplicate E matching D, transfer B/C with a 0.001-unit difference, and unresolved acquisition history A.

Observed unique source records
4
Duplicate rows
E

The checker identifies consistency tasks; it does not determine tax treatment, prove basis, automatically classify the transfer or validate a vendor’s import behaviour.

Check a transaction band

Tax-year snapshot source dates: 2026-10-24. Local arithmetic only; no account connection, recommendation or upload.

Up to 1,000: observed $99 tax-year band. Counts are inputs, not an import audit; resolve duplicates and the provider’s count definition.
