Choose the interface, then compare the quote
Kraken Pro is useful when you want an inspectable public spot schedule. Coinbase Advanced is useful when you want order-book controls in a Coinbase account and can supply its displayed tier. Neither is automatically cheaper: compare the same size, pair, order treatment, payment rail and exit. This guide covers US spot workflows, not the entire brands or derivatives.
| Question | Kraken | Coinbase |
|---|---|---|
| Simple purchase | Separate instant-buy fee/spread basis | Simple quote includes its disclosed fee/spread |
| Order book | Pro: reviewed base maker 0.4%, taker 0.8% | Advanced: account tier at order placement |
| Large order | Volume tier and executable depth can change cost | Obtain same-time tier and executable quote |
| Funding | Method-specific fees, minimum and holds | Payment action and hold depend on US method |

Start with the interface
Kraken’s instant interface suits readers comparing a simple purchase quote; Kraken Pro exposes an order book and volume/asset-based tiers. Coinbase simple buys also quote a fee and spread; Coinbase Advanced uses an order book without an added Coinbase spread. This is spot buying and selling, not margin, derivatives, staking or event contracts.
An exchange may offer other products under the same login. Their risks, account permissions and fees are separate from this comparison.

What is actually published
The Kraken schedule reviewed lists Pro Tier 1 at 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker, and Tier 2 at 0.30%/0.60% from $2,500 spot volume. Its instant trades charge 1% and custom orders 1.5%, plus spread and possible payment charges. Kraken+ waives specified instant trading fees up to its monthly allowance; it does not waive Pro fees or all spreads.
Coinbase’s public Advanced help page does not publish one rate applicable to everyone: the tier in force at order placement governs, based on applicable volume or balance criteria, with separate stablecoin/pair schedules. Its public pricing disclosure says simple buys include spread and fees computed at order time. A guessed Advanced rate would be less useful than this explicit limit.

A comparable $1,000 scenario
On Kraken Pro Tier 1, a $1,000 maker order incurs $4 and a taker order $8 before funding/withdrawal costs. A Kraken instant trade incurs a $10 trading fee before spread/payment charges. For Coinbase, enter the actual previewed maker/taker fee into the comparison tool rather than substituting a historic generic rate.
If a Coinbase preview quotes $6, it is $2 below the $8 Kraken taker example before other costs; that $6 is an example input, not Coinbase’s published price. Compare the same asset, amount, time and order type.

Funding, access and limitations
Kraken’s US funding table lists ACH via Plaid at $1 minimum, no deposit fee and a seven-day withdrawal hold; card funding lists $0.25 + 3.75% with a $10 minimum. FedWire via the listed provider has no Kraken deposit fee and 0–1 business-day processing, subject to availability. The geographic page names Maine and New York as unsupported US residences in the reviewed text.
Coinbase discloses method-dependent cash-in/cash-out costs and estimated network send fees in the transaction preview. It can batch network transfers; the estimate need not equal the final chain cost. A low execution fee alone does not establish a lower complete round-trip cost. Neither service’s account or withdrawal experience was tested hands-on.

A larger transaction: the fee is only one sensitivity
At the reviewed 0.8% base taker assumption, $10,000 costs $80 and $100,000 costs $800 in execution fees. A hypothetical 0.5% spread would add $50 or $500 respectively. These are arithmetic sensitivities, not account quotes, an assurance of execution, or a reason to spend more.
Coinbase’s comparison column deliberately requires your Advanced quote. On a $10,000 trade, every 0.1 percentage point changes the execution cost by $10. Banking minimums, holds, liquidity, price movement and volume-tier transitions may dominate this difference.
| Input | At $10,000 | At $100,000 |
|---|---|---|
| 0.8% assumed execution | $80 | $800 |
| 0.5% hypothetical spread | $50 | $500 |
| Fixed $4 hypothetical withdrawal | $4 | $4 |
