How Polymarket works: US and international explained

The two products share a brand but differ in account structure, funding, fees and access. Here is how to read each without mixing them together.

The US product is dollar-based

Polymarket US describes itself as a fiat-based designated contract market and clearing organisation under CFTC oversight. Its account guide requires personal details and identity verification before funding or trading. US trades are dollar-denominated; international crypto-wallet instructions are not the US sign-up process.

The international product operates on blockchain infrastructure with a different account/funding model. Its geographic rules include restrictions on new US positions. No account, fee or market permission carries across merely because the logo matches.

From 40¢ to a win or loss

For ten standard $1-payoff Yes contracts bought at 40¢, entry notional is $4. A winning $10 settlement produces $6 before fees; a losing settlement costs $4 before fees. US settlement documents also allow alternative settlement when the market’s rules specify it.

You can close before resolution by executing an offsetting trade. The displayed last price may not be the price available for all ten contracts, so a midpoint or old last trade should not be treated as a guaranteed exit.

US funding and withdrawal rules

The US guide lists debit card, ACH, Apple Pay, PayPal, Venmo, wire, and USDC on iPhone where available. Its withdrawal rules say bank/card deposits typically take 3–4 business days to clear and wires one business day. Instant buying power is different from withdrawable cleared funds.

Withdrawals return to the original funding source in deposit order (FIFO); third-party destinations are not supported by that rule. Deposits must come from accounts in the account holder’s own name. These are documented procedures, not a measured service-speed claim.

Fees and resolution are product-specific

The US standard taker coefficient is 0.0695 in the schedule effective October 19, 2026, with table-tennis and combo exceptions and separate rebate tiers. International category coefficients and five-decimal fee precision differ. Our fee guide calculates examples in the correct product rather than calling the entire brand free.

International resolution documentation describes proposals, challenges and final outcome determination. US settlement uses its own market rules and clearing process. Read the entity guide when a search result simply says “Polymarket”: that one word does not identify which system it describes.

Identify the account before following instructions

US dollar-account instructions and international wallet instructions are different workflows. Select the product first; then use its funding, fee and settlement documents together. A shared brand or market headline does not transfer access or fees.
