CPI release contracts: reference period, rounding and revisions

CPI describes consumer price changes, but a contract must name the index and comparison. Headline all-items and core excluding food/energy differ; month-over-month and year-over-year are different calculations. Seasonally adjusted and unadjusted series can produce different observations.

Two questions can have different answers

A hypothetical headline says inflation is 0.3%. A contract asking whether the monthly change is strictly above 0.3% does not settle Yes merely because it equals 0.3%. Another asking at least 0.3% can differ. Use the exact published precision and contract rule rather than invent extra decimals.

The BLS release is dated, but its reference month precedes the publication date. Later revisions or seasonal adjustment changes require the contract’s chosen observation/finality rule. We provide no current CPI forecast, market price or odds.
